Utpal Dutt
1929–1993
Utpal Dutt ran a Marxist theatre company in Bengal, was jailed under the Defence of India Act for a play about a 1946 naval mutiny, and wrote and staged political drama for forty years. Hindi cinema knew him as a comedian.
Those two careers barely touched. He is the blustering uncle in Gol Maal and Rang Birangi, the roles that won him Filmfare awards, and he is also the man Satyajit Ray cast in Agantuk and Jana Aranya. He thought the comedies were a job and the theatre was the work.
