Vinod Khanna

1946–2017

Vinod Khanna started as a villain and was a leading man within four years, and for most of the 1970s he was the one actor positioned as a rival to Amitabh Bachchan - they appear together in Amar Akbar Anthony and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, which is part of the point of both films.

In 1982, at the height of it, he left to spend five years at Rajneesh's ashram in Oregon. He came back in 1987, worked for another thirty years, and was twice elected to parliament from Gurdaspur.
