Vyjayanthimala
1936–
Vyjayanthimala was a trained Bharatanatyam dancer before she was an actress and she made the industry accommodate that - the dances in her films are real classical dance, performed at length, and audiences sat through them.
Devdas, Naya Daur, Madhumati, Sadhna, Gunga Jumna, Sangam, Jewel Thief. She refused the Filmfare award for best supporting actress for Devdas on the grounds that hers was a lead role, which was unheard of. She left films in 1968, practised medicine with her husband, and sat in both houses of Parliament.
