Yash Chopra
1932–2012
Yash Chopra directed Hindi films for fifty years and is the reason a particular kind of romance - chiffon, snow, an unhurried song - is called a Yash Chopra film. He began as an assistant to his elder brother B. R. Chopra and made his name with social dramas before founding Yash Raj Films in 1970, which became the largest production house in the industry.
Deewaar belongs to the harder half of his career. Between Waqt (1965) and the romances he is remembered for, he made three films with Salim-Javed's angry young man - Deewaar, Trishul and Kaala Patthar - and Deewaar is the one that won him the Filmfare award for direction. He kept working until his death in 2012, finishing Jab Tak Hai Jaan weeks before it.
