AlBal Radio went on air on 22 February 2022, a date it picked for the look of it: 22/02/2022. What it plays is Arabic music from the eighties, nineties and two thousands, which the station calls the golden eras of Arab musical expression, and it means the phrase seriously. It describes itself as a cultural beacon rather than a jukebox, and its stated purpose is to preserve and elevate Arabic heritage through the songs themselves. So a Fairuz recording might be followed by Abdel Halim Hafez or Warda, and then by something out of the Arabic underground that never got near a chart. It runs around the clock with nothing on its own pages to suggest a schedule or a presenter, just the music and a ticker that on a given evening reads George Wassouf, Samira Said, Tania Saleh.
