Description
Dabanga is an independent Sudanese news service that reports on Sudan from exile. It was founded on 1 December 2008, when covering the Darfur conflict from inside the country had become impossible, and a team of Sudanese journalists now produces its daily bulletins from studios in the Netherlands. The signal goes back into Sudan by shortwave, twice a day, so that it cannot be shut down locally, and the same newsroom feeds satellite television, a website and social channels. Coverage runs to war, displacement, human rights, health and the economy, in Sudanese Arabic, with a parallel English service online.

It was set up in exile and its newsroom and studios are in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, run since 2021 by the Dutch Stichting Dabanga Foundation after years of support from Free Press Unlimited. The shortwave signal is beamed into Sudan precisely so that it cannot be taken off air inside the country. SD records the target audience, not the broadcast origin. |
