Description
Falklands Radio is the Falkland Islands' own broadcaster, on air in one form or another since 1929, first as a rediffusion service and later as the Falkland Islands Broadcasting Service. Since 2005 it has been run by a media trust rather than the government, with station manager Corina Goss, six full-time staff and around twenty-five freelance presenters producing about ninety-four hours of programming a week. It aims to be a friendly companion to listeners spread thinly across the islands, carrying local news, community information and music, and it once carried wartime notices about blackouts and curfews. A network of low-power FM transmitters covers north, south, east and west, backed by a medium wave signal and an online stream that has given the station listeners worldwide.
