Description
Kameme FM is Kenya's best known Kikuyu language station, broadcasting out of Nairobi and calling itself Kayu Ka Muingi, the voice of the people. Its day is built on talk rather than playlists: real conversations, real issues and the stories that matter, in its own words, with news, culture and entertainment around them and a great deal of airtime handed straight to listeners. Music sits alongside the talk rather than carrying it. The station counts its audience in Central Kenya and among Kikuyu speakers abroad quite as much as in Nairobi itself, and it reaches all of them through its group's phone app, which is the only way it offers to listen online. With more than a million followers on its own page, it works less like a radio station than like a standing national conversation in Kikuyu.
