Description
Qazaq radiosy is Kazakhstan's national Kazakh-language radio service, on air around the clock from Astana and reaching about 89 percent of the country. It dates its start to a decision of September 1921 and its first broadcasts that October, which makes it one of the oldest voices in Central Asia, and it still describes itself as the voice of the great steppe. The day is built from hourly news bulletins, spoken-word features and a deep well of Kazakh music, with roughly sixty regular programmes in rotation. Mornings open with a national wake-up show, and from there the schedule moves between books, science, cinema, folk custom, public affairs and children's storytelling. Underneath it all sits the station's Golden Fund, an archive of more than 100,000 recordings gathered since 1948 plus over 300 musical manuscripts, and that collection is what gives the music its unusual depth.
