Radio Pakistan dates itself to the midnight of 14 August 1947, when the words this is Pakistan Broadcasting Service first went on air, and it became the PBC in December 1972. The Islamabad operation is the centre of the network rather than a local outlet: national news bulletins, current affairs and the corporation's Central Productions all originate here, and the News and Current Affairs Channel runs from Islamabad and the provincial capitals from 7am to midnight. Around the news sit made-in-Islamabad features, from the environment strand Behtar Mahol Behtar Mustaqbil to the children's programme Jugnu Taray and commemorative productions for the national days. The PBC network of AM, short wave and FM stations reaches about 98 per cent of the population, and Islamabad is where much of what the rest of it relays is made.
