Description
This is the big one on the Caribbean dial. TWR's transmitting site on Bonaire, branded Shine 800 AM, has been on the air since 1964 and now runs what its operator calls the largest AM transmitter in the Western Hemisphere, a 450,000 watt medium wave signal on 800 kHz. Almost nobody who listens is on the island: the point of that much power is to jump the water, and the station reckons on a potential audience of a hundred million people across Latin America and the Caribbean. The content is Christian, better than forty programmes of Bible teaching, devotional talk and encouragement, mostly in Spanish and also in Portuguese, English and the Amazonian language Macuxi. Cuba, Venezuela and Brazil are named as the places it most wants to reach, and the tone is pastoral rather than evangelistic hard sell, aimed squarely at people going through a hard time. It is a transmitter with a congregation instead of a local audience.

Material that would have made this page fuller, and was refused. A page with five named presenters looks better than a page with none even when the five are a website theme's demonstration content, and the difference is invisible to a reader. So it is recorded here instead.
