Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986)

Charandas is a devoted wrestler who has been taught by his guru to stay away from women. Then he sets eyes on Chameli, the spirited daughter of the local coal merchant, and his vow does not survive long. The trouble is that the two families belong to different castes and both are fiercely proud of it, so the young lovers enlist the help of a neighbourhood lawyer who treats the whole affair with amused calm, played by Amjad Khan in one of his rare comic roles. Basu Chatterji, master of gentle middle-class comedies, uses the romance to poke fun at caste snobbery, and Pankaj Kapur and Bharati Achrekar are memorable as Chameli's parents. The film's cheerful title song is still played at weddings.
