Bhavani is an orphaned village girl whose one constant is her faith in Ammoru, the local mother goddess. When she marries into a wealthy family, her cruel mother-in-law makes her life miserable, and worse still, she becomes the target of Gorakh, a black-magic sorcerer with an old grudge. As his attacks grow more terrifying, the goddess herself takes a hand, sometimes in disguise, to guard her devotee. Ammoru was a landmark Telugu devotional fantasy and a big hit, notable for its then-ambitious computer graphics, which took years to complete. Ramya Krishna's fierce goddess and Soundarya's suffering heroine became defining roles, and Rami Reddy's sorcerer is one of Telugu cinema's most remembered villains.
