Suryavamsam (1998)

The stern, respected head of a village is admired for his integrity, but his youngest son is the family's disappointment, uneducated and treated almost like a servant at home. When the son marries a bright young woman, played by Meena, who chooses him over the match her family wanted, his father throws them out. With her encouragement he works his way up from nothing to become a successful businessman while she studies for a career of her own, yet nothing matters to him as much as winning back his father's love. Venkatesh plays both father and son. The film is a remake of the 1997 Tamil hit Suryavamsam directed by Vikraman, and the same story was remade in Hindi as Sooryavansham (1999) with Amitabh Bachchan, a film still famous for its endless television repeats.
