Ulidavaru Kandanthe (2014)

Regina, a young journalist in Bangalore, travels back to the fishing town of Malpe on the Udupi coast to write about a crime that shook the place during the Krishna Janmashtami festival. She gathers accounts from five people: a boy who ran away from home, a lonely fishwife, a local strongman, an old fisherman and Richi, a volatile young gangster. Each tells only what they saw, and the full picture emerges slowly from the fragments. Ulidavaru Kandanthe ("as seen by the rest") was Rakshit Shetty's debut as director and is regarded as a landmark of new Kannada cinema, admired for its non-linear, Rashomon-like structure, coastal Karnataka setting and use of the tiger-dance tradition. Rakshit's Richi became a cult character, and the film was remade in Tamil as Richie (2017).
