Gautham is a cheerful, music-loving young man who lives with an air of innocence, but behind it lies a mind deeply scarred by an incident he cannot remember clearly. Hema, who comes to know him, is drawn to him and slowly realises how fragile he is, and the film becomes a story of love and patience as she and a doctor try to help him face what happened. Fazil, the Malayalam master known for emotional dramas like Manichitrathazhu and Aniyathipraavu, directed, and his earlier hit with the same pair, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, made this reunion of Vijay and Shalini much awaited. It was Vijay's 25th film and gave him a rare chance at a dramatic, vulnerable role. Ilaiyaraaja's songs, including 'Roja Poonthottam', are a highlight.
