A young archaeologist is part of a team studying an old temple to Krishna, known in Tamil as Maayon, in a village in Tamil Nadu. Legends about a treasure buried beneath it and strange happenings inside its walls have kept the villagers away at night. When he and his colleagues find evidence of what lies below, greed sets in, and a scheme to smuggle the treasure out runs up against forces that seem to protect the temple. Maayon mixes the treasure-hunt adventure with mythology and a debate between faith and reason. Ilaiyaraaja composed the music and K. S. Ravikumar and Radha Ravi appear in supporting roles.
