Balli is a petty criminal from the streets of Chennai with no prospects and little regard for anyone. Hoping for a big payday, he and his friends kidnap Jyothika, a popular film star, and hide her away. At first she is terrified and he is only interested in the ransom, but as the days pass the spoiled star and the rough young man get to know each other, and each begins to see the other's world differently, while the police and other dangers close in. Maayavi was produced by director Bala and directed by his associate Singampuli. Its central idea is playful: Jyothika plays herself, a real star in a fictional kidnapping, opposite Suriya, her real-life partner. Devi Sri Prasad wrote the songs.
