Sethu and Ranjani are in love, but their families will never accept it, and they decide to die together by leaping from a cliff. Sethu survives. Years later he is a gifted dance instructor at a hotel, closed off and grieving, when a cheerful, stubborn young woman, Malini, joins his class and falls for him, though he wants nothing to do with love. Alongside runs the gentle, funny story of Chaplin Chellappa, a comic performer modelled on the Little Tramp. K. Balachander's film is one of the most loved Tamil romances of the 1980s. Kamal Haasan plays both Sethu and Chellappa, a tender homage to Charlie Chaplin, and dances superbly, while Revathi shines as Malini. Ilaiyaraaja's songs, including Enna Satham Indha Neram, remain hugely popular.
