Description

As a child Milkha Singh saw his family killed in the violence of Partition and fled to India alone, growing up in refugee camps with his sister Isri. Drifting into petty crime, he joined the Army, where a coach noticed that the young man could run, and running became his life. The film follows him from barefoot army races to the Commonwealth Games and the 1960 Rome Olympics, and to a race in Pakistan that forced him to face the land he had fled. Farhan Akhtar transformed himself physically for the role. Milkha Singh gave the rights to his story for a token one rupee. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag ("run, Milkha, run", the last words his father shouted to him) was a major hit and won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film and the Filmfare awards for best film and best actor.
