Raj Batra runs a thriving bridal-wear shop in Old Delhi and his wife Mita is determined that their daughter Pia will not suffer for her parents' lack of English. They move to an upmarket neighbourhood, hire a coach to train them for parent interviews and still get rejected. Their last hope is the seats reserved for poor children, so the family moves into a slum to pass as needy. There they meet Shyam Prakash, a kind and penniless neighbour who helps them, and Raj starts to feel the weight of what they are taking from families like his. Hindi Medium is a sharp, funny satire on class anxiety and India's education system. Irrfan Khan won the Filmfare award for Best Actor, Pakistani star Saba Qamar made her Hindi debut, and the film was a hit in China and led to the sequel Angrezi Medium (2020).
