Generations ago, an ancestor of a rich zamindar family stole the jewels of the goddess Durga, and the family was cursed: every forty-eight years, a young man of the house must die. Now the cycle has come round again, and the one marked for death is Murari, a fun-loving young man who is busy falling for Vasundhara, a spirited young woman. As the elders perform rituals to break the curse, mysterious threats close in on him, and faith, family and fate collide in the run-up to the fateful day. Krishna Vamsi's film was an early hit for Mahesh Babu, blending a lively romance and a big joint-family atmosphere with a supernatural story. Its wedding song "Alanati Ramachandrudi" remains a fixture at Telugu weddings.
