An easy-going young man falls for the daughter of a rich and domineering woman who runs her household and business with an iron hand and despises anyone beneath her. When the couple marry against her wishes, he moves into the family mansion and the film becomes a battle of wits between son-in-law and mother-in-law, played for comedy, with a little action and family emotion. This Mappillai is a remake of the 1989 Tamil hit of the same name starring Rajinikanth, and Dhanush, Rajinikanth's son-in-law in real life, plays the role his father-in-law once did. Manisha Koirala, returning to Tamil cinema, takes the part of the haughty mother-in-law, with Hansika Motwani as the heroine and Vivek handling the comedy.
