Dayashankar Pandey is buried in debts and his sister's wedding is coming up, so his only way out is to sell the family house. The trouble is that it is occupied by tenants, a schoolteacher and his family, who pay a pittance in rent and refuse to move. Daya moves in to make life difficult for them, they return the favour, and the battle of wits slowly turns into something warmer as he gets to know them, especially the teacher's spirited daughter Saraswati. Priyadarshan's film is a Hindi remake of Sathyan Anthikad's Malayalam comedy Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam (1986), and it mixes gentle comedy with a story about rent laws, debt and decency, helped by Paresh Rawal's sure comic timing.
