Kasaai (2019)

Kasaai ("butcher") is an independent Hindi film set in a village in Rajasthan, about a household dominated by a cruel and calculating head of the family, and the young lovers and women whose lives he controls. It is adapted from a story by the Rajasthani writer Charan Singh Pathik, whose work also inspired Vishal Bhardwaj's Pataakha. Shot in rural Rajasthan with many local actors, it is a bleak, unsentimental look at patriarchy and village power, anchored by veteran actress Mita Vashisht alongside newcomer Richa Meena.
