Muklawa (2019)

Muklawa takes its name from an old Punjabi custom in which a bride stays on in her parents' house after the wedding and joins her husband only when a later ceremony, the muklawa, is held. Ammy Virk plays a young groom who has married the woman he loves, played by Sonam Bajwa, but must wait, and the film turns his longing, the meddling of both families and a string of village misunderstandings into a light romantic comedy. Set in a rural Punjab of decades past, it leans on nostalgia, costumes, folk-flavoured songs and comic support from Gurpreet Ghuggi. Ammy Virk and Sonam Bajwa had earlier been a popular pair in Nikka Zaildar, and this was another warm period comedy built around them.
