Tahaan is a young boy living in a Kashmiri village with his mother, grandfather and sister, still waiting for his father who disappeared years before. His closest companion is Birbal, the family donkey. When debts force the family to give Birbal up, the donkey ends up with a trader across the hills, and Tahaan sets off to win him back, a journey that brings him into contact with kind strangers and with the dangers that lurk in a troubled land. Directed and shot by Santosh Sivan, one of India's great cinematographers, Tahaan is a gentle, visually striking children's film set against the snowy beauty of Kashmir, with fine supporting work from Anupam Kher and Rahul Bose. It travelled to several international film festivals.
