Khap (2011)

Khap takes on the issue of honour killings ordered or encouraged by the khap panchayats, the traditional caste and clan councils of rural Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, which have long opposed marriages within the same clan or across caste lines. The story follows a young woman, played by Yuvika Chaudhary, whose love life runs up against the council's decrees, and a family torn between affection and the fear of social disgrace. Om Puri plays a powerful elder, and Govind Namdeo, Mohnish Bahl and Manoj Pahwa are among the supporting cast. Directed by Ajai Sinha, a television director known for the serial Hasratein, the film was made at a time when several honour-killing cases were in the national news.
