Anirudh is the principal of a school for blind children in Delhi, blind himself, fiercely capable and allergic to anything that smells of pity. Kavita, a young widow who has withdrawn from life after her husband's death, is persuaded to volunteer at the school, and the two grow close. Their engagement should be a happy ending, but Anirudh starts to wonder whether Kavita loves him or is sacrificing herself out of compassion, and his pride becomes the real obstacle. Sai Paranjpye's quiet, sensitive film was made with blind children from a real school and avoids every cliche about disability. It won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Feature Film, and Naseeruddin Shah won the National Award for Best Actor.
