Sundar is a poor, ungainly waiter who supports his mother and is laughed at for his looks. A chance encounter with the film world brings him an unexpected break as a comedian, and success follows, but fame does not bring him what he really wants, the love of the young woman whose kindness he has misread. Main Sunder Hoon ("I am handsome") is the Hindi remake of the Tamil classic Server Sundaram, made by the same directing duo, Krishnan-Panju, and it gave Mehmood, the leading comedian of Hindi cinema, a rare starring role that blends comedy with pathos. Shankar-Jaikishan composed the songs. It is a gentle, bittersweet film about dignity and dreams.
