Shabnam Mausi (2005)

Shabnam Mausi is based on the life of the real Shabnam Mausi, a member of the hijra community who was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1998, the first transgender person in India to hold elected office. The film follows her from a childhood of rejection, through her life in the community, to her decision to stand for election and fight for the poor. Ashutosh Rana, best known for his menacing villains in Dushman and Sangharsh, takes on the title role in a striking change of image.
