Description

The film opens in 1941 with Subhas Chandra Bose under British house arrest in Calcutta and follows his daring escape through Afghanistan to Germany, his attempts to win support for Indian independence in Europe, his marriage to Emilie Schenkl, the dangerous submarine journey to Asia and his leadership of the Indian National Army against the British. Sachin Khedekar gives a dignified, restrained performance as Netaji, and Shyam Benegal treats the story as a sweeping historical chronicle rather than a hagiography. A. R. Rahman composed the score and songs, including stirring marching numbers. The film won the National Film Award for best feature film on national integration and remains one of the most detailed screen accounts of Bose's war years.
