7½ Phere (2005)

An earnest young woman trying to make it in television (Juhi Chawla) persuades a large, quarrelsome joint family to let her crew film their son's wedding preparations as a reality soap. Her cynical, wisecracking boss (Irrfan Khan) wants drama and is ready to manufacture it, and as the cameras roll the family's grudges and secrets spill out on screen. Ishaan Trivedi's satirical comedy, released in 2005 just as reality television was taking hold in India, is an early showcase of Irrfan Khan's gift for deadpan comedy, opposite Juhi Chawla at her most bubbly. The title plays on the seven rounds of the Hindu wedding ritual, with the extra half-round standing for everything the cameras add.
