Bineesh has been smoking since he was a schoolboy, and by the time he is a young man in his village, he smokes so constantly that people call him Theevandi, the old word for a steam train. His habit becomes a family scandal, a problem for his romance with his childhood sweetheart Devi, and a liability for his uncle's political ambitions. The film is a satire that uses one young man's addiction to poke fun at politics, family pressure and small-town life, with a warm romantic track. It was the debut of director Fellini T. P. and of actress Samyuktha Menon, and the song 'Jeevamshamayi' by Kailas Menon became a huge hit. Tovino Thomas's performance helped make it one of his most popular films.
