Viren's family in Mumbai arranges for him to meet Aditi, a spirited girl from a family friend's household. Neither wants to marry, and Viren is secretly in love with someone else, so they call it off. Freed from the pressure, they start meeting as friends, and a friendship full of jokes, confidences and long conversations grows, along with complications neither of them planned. Socha Na Tha ("never thought of it") was the first film directed by Imtiaz Ali and the debut of Abhay Deol, nephew of Dharmendra, who produced it. It took years to reach cinemas and was a modest earner, but its natural dialogue and unhurried, believable romance won it a devoted following and set the template for Imtiaz Ali's later films such as Jab We Met.
