In Vyasarpadi, North Chennai, a blank wall in a housing colony has become a symbol of power: whichever political faction paints its leader on it controls the neighbourhood, and the fight over it has already cost lives. Kaali is an educated young man with an IT job who wants a quiet life and the love of Kalai, but his best friend Anbu is a rising party worker determined to win the wall back. As the rivalry heats up, Kaali is pulled into a cycle of violence he cannot escape. Pa. Ranjith's second film was praised for its authentic portrait of working-class Dalit life in North Chennai, its local politics and rich characters. Santhosh Narayanan's songs and Kalaiyarasan's breakout performance as Anbu made it a landmark of new Tamil cinema.
