Murad Ali Mohammed is a retired lawyer, liked and trusted in his Varanasi neighbourhood. When his nephew Shahid turns out to be involved in a bombing, suspicion falls on the entire family, and the neighbours who once shared their festivals turn away. Charged with complicity, the family's honour and loyalty to the country end up in court, where Murad's Hindu daughter-in-law Aarti, also a lawyer, takes up their defence against a sharp public prosecutor. Mulk is a courtroom drama about prejudice and what it means to belong, and it marked a turn in Anubhav Sinha's career towards socially pointed films. Rishi Kapoor's dignified performance, one of the last of his career, is its anchor.
