Marykutty was born Mathukutty and has transitioned to live as a woman. Her dream is to join the Kerala police as a sub-inspector, and she returns to her home town to prepare, only to face mockery from neighbours, hostility from her own family and harassment from a local police officer who sets out to break her. Ranjith Sankar's film follows her stubborn, often funny fight for dignity with warmth rather than preaching. Jayasurya's transformation in the title role was widely praised and won him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor, shared that year, and the film was noted as one of the first mainstream Malayalam films to put a transgender protagonist at its centre. Ranjith Sankar and Jayasurya worked together on several films, including Punyalan Agarbattis and Pretham.
