Ram and Janani fall in love as teenagers in school, and despite their families' objections, they marry young. Their life together starts happily, but Ram is fighting a battle that no one around him fully understands, a mental illness that pushes him to the edge. The film opens with his death and moves back through time as Janani pieces together what happened, turning a sweet first-love story into a dark psychological drama. 3 was the directorial debut of Aishwarya Rajinikanth, and it introduced composer Anirudh Ravichander, whose song Why This Kolaveri Di, sung by Dhanush, became a worldwide internet sensation before the film's release. It also gave an early prominent role to Sivakarthikeyan as Ram's friend. The film is admired for its music and for bringing bipolar disorder into a mainstream Tamil love story.
