The film traces the path of Bhagat Singh from his childhood in Punjab, through his anger at British rule and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, to his role in the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association alongside Chandrashekhar Azad, Sukhdev and Rajguru. It covers the killing of a British police officer to avenge Lala Lajpat Rai, the bombing of the Central Legislative Assembly, and the long prison hunger strike that made the young revolutionaries national heroes. Bobby Deol plays Bhagat Singh and his elder brother Sunny Deol plays Azad, the only time the brothers shared the screen in such roles, with Amrita Singh as Bhagat Singh's mother. The film was released on the same day in June 2002 as Rajkumar Santoshi's The Legend of Bhagat Singh, one of the best-known clashes of rival films on the same subject in Hindi cinema.
