Jahan Ara tells the story of Jahanara, the eldest daughter of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, through a romance. She loves the poet-nobleman Mirza Yusuf Changezi, but after her mother Mumtaz Mahal's death she promises to devote herself to her grieving father. As palace intrigue grows and her brothers' rivalry for the throne gathers force, duty and love pull her in opposite directions. Mala Sinha plays the princess with quiet grandeur, Bharat Bhushan is the lovelorn poet and Prithviraj Kapoor brings his imperial presence to Shah Jahan. The film's lasting treasure is Madan Mohan's score, among his finest, with ghazals such as "Phir wohi shaam wohi gham wohi tanhaai hai" sung by Talat Mahmood and "Woh chup rahen to mere dil ke daagh jalte hain" by Lata Mangeshkar, which remain treasured by lovers of film music.
