D. K. Malhotra lives contentedly in Delhi with his wife Indu and their two daughters, until news arrives that a woman he had a brief affair with years ago has died, leaving behind their son, Rahul. With nowhere else for the boy to go, Malhotra brings him home, and Indu must face the living proof of her husband's betrayal while a lonely child longs to belong. Masoom was Shekhar Kapur's first film as director, adapted from Erich Segal's novel Man, Woman and Child. Gulzar wrote the screenplay and lyrics, and R. D. Burman's songs, including Tujhse Naraz Nahin Zindagi and the children's favourite Lakdi Ki Kaathi, are classics. It also features Urmila Matondkar and Jugal Hansraj as child actors, and is remembered as one of the most delicate family dramas of 1980s Hindi cinema.
