A hill village in the forest is being terrorised by a wild tusker that destroys crops and kills villagers, and the people want a kumki, an elephant trained to drive off wild elephants. Bomman, a mahout whose beloved elephant Manickam is a mild temple animal, agrees to stand in for a few days for the money, pretending Manickam is a kumki. In the village he falls in love with Alli, the chief's daughter, and stretches his stay, knowing that the wild elephant could return at any time. Kumki marked the debut of Vikram Prabhu, grandson of Sivaji Ganesan, and was a big hit. D. Imman's songs, including Solitaley and Ayyayayo Aananthame, were hugely popular, and the lush forest photography is a highlight.
