Chandrika, a young filmmaker, arrives at a prison to make a documentary about three convicts awaiting execution: Jaggu, a hardened criminal; Ishaan, a quiet man who calmly admits his crime; and Mohan, who insists he is innocent. As she spends time with them, encouraged by a liberal-minded jailer, their stories unfold and she finds her own troubled marriage reflected in what she hears. Nagesh Kukunoor, who also plays Mohan, made the film as a small, intimate drama largely set within prison walls, and it is one of his most admired works. The film offers rich roles to Naseeruddin Shah and Jackie Shroff, whose performance as Jaggu was widely praised as among his best.
