Dupatta (1952)

Dupatta is an Urdu melodrama of love, sacrifice and social pressure, centred on a young woman played by Noor Jehan whose feelings put her at odds with family and circumstance. Made in Lahore only a few years after Partition, it was among the first films to show that the new Pakistani industry could produce a major popular success, and it was also shown widely across the border. Above all it is remembered for its songs, composed by Feroz Nizami and sung by Noor Jehan herself, including the much-loved "Chandni raatein". For anyone curious about the singer known as Malika-e-Tarannum, the queen of melody, this is one of her signature films as an actress.
