Kanhaiya, a young man from a remote village in Kutch, returns from Mumbai with the first television set his neighbours have ever seen. His stories of the big city, and the TV itself, make him a celebrity overnight, and soon the whole village gathers around the screen, bringing unexpected changes to its customs, romances and rivalries, while Kanhaiya himself falls in love. Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost was the directing debut of Apoorva Lakhia, who had worked as an assistant director on Lagaan, and it was filmed in the desert landscapes of Kutch in Gujarat. Though it was not a box-office success, it is a gentle rural comedy about how modern media reaches the village, with music by Anu Malik.
