Saraswatichandra, the son of a wealthy Bombay family, is engaged to Kumud, a girl from a princely household. He goes to see her before the wedding, they fall in love, and they write to each other. But a family quarrel drives Saraswatichandra to break the engagement and leave home, and Kumud is married off to a dissolute nobleman. Their paths cross again in very different circumstances. Based on the classic Gujarati novel by Govardhanram Tripathi, the film was among the last major black-and-white Hindi films and won National Film Awards for its cinematography and for Kalyanji-Anandji's music. Its songs, including "Chandan Sa Badan", "Phool Tumhe Bheja Hai Khat Mein" and "Main To Bhool Chali Babul Ka Desh", are classics.
