Oh Darling! Yeh Hai India! is a madcap musical satire set over a single night in Bombay. Shah Rukh Khan plays a broke young man known only as Hero, who meets a sharp-witted singer-dancer, and the two are swept up in the schemes of a flamboyant villain who intends to auction India to the highest bidder, complete with a look-alike of the President. Nearly every character is a type rather than a person, and the film moves between song, slapstick and political jabs at corruption and consumerism. Director Ketan Mehta, known for the folk-tale satire Mirch Masala, was attempting something almost unique in Hindi cinema, an absurdist stage-style musical, and Amrish Puri hams gloriously as the villain. It failed on release but has gained a cult following among Shah Rukh Khan fans as one of the oddest films of his early career.
