Priya, a convent-educated young woman, has set her heart on becoming a nun. Thomas, a wealthy young businessman, falls in love with her and, desperate to change her mind, enlists Deva, a cheerful, dance-mad hairdresser, to befriend her and soften her resolve. The plan works too well: Priya and Deva grow close, and the three are left with a tangle of love, loyalty and faith. Minsara Kanavu ('electric dream') was the directing debut of cinematographer Rajiv Menon and Kajol's first Tamil film. A. R. Rahman's soundtrack, with songs such as 'Vennilave' and 'Thanga Thamarai', became one of his best loved. The film won four National Film Awards, for music, male and female playback (S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and K. S. Chithra) and Prabhu Deva's choreography. It was released in Hindi as Sapnay.
