Saraswati is a gentle, bookish librarian from a strict Tamil Brahmin family in Mumbai. Her plain looks keep costing her marriage proposals, holding up her younger sister's wedding and frustrating her father. Desperate, she turns to Inder, the neighbour everyone avoids, a tattooed former convict with a dark past, to help her change her image. Their unlikely friendship deepens into love, but it sets her against her family and drags them both into Inder's troubled history. The intense, tear-soaked romance marked the Hindi debut of Harshvardhan Rane and the Bollywood debut of Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane, and Himesh Reshammiya's songs became very popular. A modest performer on release in 2016, it built a large following over the years, and its 2025 re-release in cinemas earned more than its original run.
